The column that doesn’t have a name yet… Part II
No one came up with a name for our weekly support column, so it will remain nameless until it does.
This week! Confused about that memory card slot on your device? (Or not, not all devices have memory card slots) Here’s a little insight.
All of our newest devices come with maps preloaded on their local hard drives, so, the memory slots are there in case your hard drive fills up and you want to expand content. Oh, and by the way, before you make changes to your device, please take a few moments to back up your device.
What do we mean by expanded content?
Additional maps (Europe, perhaps?), additional voices, audiobooks, mp3 music, more POIs, just about anything that can be added to a device with a full hard drive.
How do I store media on the memory card?
First, create folders in the card’s directory like this…

Simply copy the appropriate files into the correct folder, insert the SD card into your device and turn the TomTom on. Your device will automatically search for these files when starting up. Please note that when you’ve added a lot of content to your memory card, your device will take a bit longer to start up. While this happens, please be patient and don’t turn off or restart your device.
Which memory card should I buy?
If you need to install an additional map on a new memory card, we advise that you choose a memory card with enough memory to store your maps and any additional information such as applications, voice files, points of interest, etc.
Note: The performance of your TomTom device depends on various factors:
• Make sure you have the latest application version installed.
• A memory card with a higher read speed may improve performance.
What size memory card do I need?
It really depends on how much content you plan on adding/needing. Likely, the largest file you’ll want to add is an additional map. The biggest maps can be greater than 2GB. The actual size of our various map downloads can be seen before you purchase via our TomTom.com Mapstore or in TomTom HOME. When loading the SD with data, Reserve space for the TomTom application, voice files, points of interest, etc. We advise that you reserve at least 30 MB. Also keep in mind that the available size on a memory card is less than the size mentioned on the card.
Example: A 1 GB memory card usually has about 970 MB available space.
Which memory cards can I use?
Depends on the device. Here’s a convenient chart. If your device isn’t on the list, that means it doesn’t have a memory card slot.
