Change your TomTom device’s splash screen… Redux!

Here are some updated instructions on how to change the startup image on your TomTom device…

1. Select the image or photograph you want to have displayed on your TomTom device.

2. Re-size the image to:
• 320 pixels wide x 240 pixels high (TomTom ONE, ONE 3rd edition)
• 480 wide x 272 pixels high (TomTom ONE XL/XL*S, GO 720/920/T)

3. Save the image as a 24-bit Bitmap file named “splash.bmp” (ONE) or “splashw.bmp” (ONE XL/XL*S, GO 720/920/T)

4. Plug Your TomTom device into your computer via the USB cable

5. Open your TomTom “hard drive” within My Computer

6. Locate the original splash file which is called either “splash.bmp” or “splashw.bmp” and rename it “splash1.bmp” (this naming allows you keep the original TomTom splash screen)

7. Copy your image (splash.bmp OR splashw.bmp) from your computer to the same TomTom directory

8. Disconnect and boot up your TomTom device. Your personalized picture should be there to greet you when you turn it on.

Keep playing! For advanced users, there are other images in your device’s root file that can be changed for further personalization.

BE ADVISED: When modding your device, ALWAYS create a backup using TomTom HOME software. (But how do I do that?)

My wife bought me a TomTom 920T for my Birthday, after I bought her a Tom Tom for her Birthday. We love it. We bought TomTom’s with European maps because we are both military and travel to Italy from time to time, and hope to be stationed there one day. On our last visit I did an abnormal amount of bicycleling. I realized t would have been great to be able to mount the Tom Tom to my Cannondale R600. Does Tom Tom make an mount compatible for bicycling? Or are there any companies that make mounts for bicycles that are compatible with the TomTom 920T?

Thank You
CPT Forsyth

Hi David,

TomTom does not currently make a bicycle-compatible mount. However, there may be third-party manufacturers who do.

I’d head over to sites such as http://www.tomtomforums.com or http://www.gpsreview.net. These forums – which are not affiliated with TomTom in any way – have very knowledgeable people who might be able to help.

Thanks for stopping by!

David - Check out this RAM mount for your 920T. You should be able to mount it on your bike with this:

Can the 730T support two Bluetooth devices at the same time? I am using the 730T’s Bluetooth Hands Free function for my cell phone. I am looking at TomeTom’s Remote Control but need to know if my 730T can support both cell and Remote Control via Bluetooth at the same time.

Thanks!

Administrator 09.30.08 at 11:48 am

Hock,

Good question. The answer is Yes. The GO 730T will support the remote control AND mobile phone at the same time. It can’t support more than one mobile simultaneously, however

I followed the instructions for adding a new picture for my splash screen however, it did not work. I made sure to follow the directions to the letter, being sure I had correct pixel sizing and saving with the correct file extension. Please help.

My girlfriend just bought me a tomtom GO 720 for my birthday which is coming up soon. Yes I already know what she got me, cause I’m using it. I have a question for anyone who will return my question. I already know that my Verizon phone will not work for the bluetooth. I also tried to download music into it, but it says that I don’t have enough space to add my music into my GPS. I want to know if I need to get a bigger memory stick for it and where can I purchase them at.
I hope someone can get back to me with this information.
Thank you for anyone who read this.

Hello
I bought the TomTom One 130 and its awesome. Easy to use and navigate! Can I download different icons?

Thank you in advance for your help

Administrator 12.23.08 at 12:21 pm

Glad to hear it David. TomTom HOME software has thousands of different car icons you can download, in addition to the ones already on your device. You can download and install at http://www.tomtom.com/home

Sorry for a double post.

Hello,
I have recently upgraded the firmware on my GO 920 and going through the “Change preferences” options I saw the new “Show Lane images” icon. I hold my breath and clicked it, but :( - the response was: “The map or map version you are using is not compatible with Lane guidance. For more information, visit Tomtom.com”
I understand that this new Lane guidance feature was introduced only with GO 930 and 730, but is there really any hardware limit on GO 920 that prevents GO 920 from having it? It is a very nice feature for busy highway intersections and it would be great to be able to upgrade just a software to use it. I love my 920 and would hate to return it to the store just to get the GO 930 because of this difference.

Hopefully I am wrong and TomTom has already released the patch for loyal customers :)
Thank you in advance for your answer.

I have a TomTom 730. After I input a route/destination, how in the world do I delete that destination? I can delete prior detinations, but can never delete the “active” destination? For instance, if I input a destination and decide not to go to that destination, how can I delete it? Please help.

How do you change the splash screen if you have a Mac with OSX (Leopard)? Since downloading a screen from TomTom Home, I am getting no startup screen at all. When I turn it on it shows just a white screen then goes directly to the route screen. It is a TomTom ONE. Thank you!

Administrator 01.12.09 at 10:48 am

Cristopher. To clear an active route just tap the map screen, hit the arrow in the lower right hand corner twice then tap the “Clear Route” icon.

Hey everyone,
My husband bought me the TomTom 130.S and I love it! But I’m trying to use a different startup image and shut image. How can I do this? I chose 2 images from TomTom Home. I read the instructions above and dont need to make my own picture. In TomTom Home, I dloaded the pic and it was automatically put onto my TomTom. But, my TomTom isnt using the pic I chose. When I look at my TomTom hard drive (HD is F) I dont see a folder to move it to? I can see the pic that I dloaded (its a bmp file named Splash.bmp). Would someone happen to know where I need to put this image? I dont have a splash folder (I read somewhre else that I need to put it in the splash folder, but I dont have one). Thanks for you help (Sorry for the long explanation, I’m not all that computer smart).

Thanks,
Tammy

After moving across the country to Texas, my roommate bought me a TomTom ONE to help me get around the city. I am in AWE! These things are so cool.
I am having some trouble getting the splash screen to change, and I may already have deleted something. Anyone else download a new opening/closing image and not able to figure out where it goes?
Thanks!
Cat

Hello

I have question about GO 720 Route recalculate feature.

Really Its amazing if I miss exit or turn, with in 4-5 seconds my device recalculate the route. But the only thing wonder me during this entire process i do not get any verbal message like “ROUTE RECALCULATE”.

Then purposefully I did couple of wrong turn for test trial and every time it recalculate the route but without any Verbal message (As with my old Garmin and my wife’s current MIO do).

So I am little bit confused. This is the basic TTS feature for all GPS product. I want to know how to get it fixed. I already uninstall and reinstall application from tomtom website.

2) In GO 720, do have we facility of FM for navigation instructions? It works nice on mp3 player and when I go to speaker preference menu it does not give me option of FM in navigation instruction, but next submenu for MP3 player have that option. So for this just I want to know FM facility not available for Navigation instruction or is it? So atleast I stop bothering myself and keep searching online and in menu.

I read the above about changing the splash screen on my xl-s and did it once. When I went to change to another picture, it will not work anymore. The part in the above directions that is being left out is how to close your gps correctly. I use Windows XP, and when I close out the gps I either use TomTom information site to disconnect or XP disconnect icon. I allow the gps to close and then remove from computer. When I go to restart the TomTom logo comes up with the sound and stays for a while before going to the first screen to agree not to use while driving etc. I have done the bmp resizing several ways and even tried putting the original as the only splash screen in the hard drive and renaming it back to splash.bmp, nothing. Any help would be appreciated. When I load the picture into the hard drive area, I see the X come on the gps and it looks like it is loading ok. What is going wrong? Now just a blank screen on boot up or boot down.
Thanks

I have had the One XL-S for quite some time, although after the first firmware update, it lost a lot of pong-type sounds, which I don’t miss as it is much quieter to program routes, and favs, and stuff like that.

I also created and changed my start-up image to “Gone Fishin’”, since I took the pic, re-sized it, and uploaded it for others to use.

I was happy to see it get 3.75 rated starts from 3 users…Sweeet! If you e-mail me, maybe I can walk you through changing yours, although my factory yellow shut down screen is the current suspend.bmp, I still love seeing my rods and reels everytime I turn it on to head to some lake ramp for a fishing tournament.

It has guided me very accurately through the dark and thick fog of winding, rural roads in the middle of BFE sometimes, and never put me “In the lake.” :D

I’m not familiar with the GO’s, the 130’s, or many others. I was just toying with some of my pics for my One XLS, but maybe I can help you out with moving and re-moving the splash.bmp and suspend.bmp

Nick is correct, make sure you use Home to disconnect your device at the top pull down menus, and never just pull the plug, when the image on the device is showing you NOT TO. :D

I have had to format my entire device once, and was left with Guam…WTF?!? Thank god the good people on the TomTom forums helped me get it fixed with on-line Home downloads…Whew!!! That would have been a pricey paper weight/ door stop, if I had bricked it!

Jason 03.24.09 at 4:05 pm

If you have duplicate splash.bmp in the root folder, this may be causing a conflict. I think I just deleted the factory splash.bmp on mine, therefore leaving just one for the unit to “see” and use.

If you have no splash.bmp in the root folder, this may also be creating the blank startup screen, since it is not “seeing” any splash.bmp to use.

Make sense??? :D

Jason 03.24.09 at 4:07 pm

I don’t recall using the slapshw.bmp, but I am sure I used “widescreen” resolution, when resizing my pic of my fishing gear, since the One XLS is a “widescreen.”

I haven’t messed with anything but GPS quick fixes and mapshare updates in ages, thank goodness…If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Hi, I have a TomTom One XL and I changed the splash screen using the TomTom Home software.

Does anyone know how I can restore the original splash screen? The original splashw.bmp has been overwritten with the one I downloaded.

Perhaps somoene could point me to the original file on the internet?

Thanks

Chris 04.26.09 at 7:34 am

I just bought the 130. I also have had the 125 for a couple of months now. I was wondering if any one know how to change the arrow to one of the car symbols like the 125?

ScoobyCoupe 05.10.09 at 6:36 pm

^^ Here is a link to the original splashw file:

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k186/ScoobyCoupe/splashw.jpg

You should be able to Save Picture As a bitmap file from your browser.

Regards.

Oh no, Are you serious. Not Bart Simpsons voice. I don’t care for that. I hope my TomTom don’t get Simpsons voice.

Is it possible for my Tom Tom One XL to dowload the capability to name the the street that I will turn on with a voice command?

David 07.01.09 at 11:21 am

I really love my Tom Tom One XL. My wife’s sister and her family went on vacation and I let them borrow it. I named my GPS Mandy because that is the voice to give directions. While my in-laws were on vacation, they took various pictures of Mandy titled, “Mandy on Vacation”. Mandy at the Grand Canyon, Mandy at Painted Desert, Mandy in Las Vegas, etc. I really got a kick out of that.
