Buyer’s guide

We’ve introduced a few new TomToms lately and we understand that keeping track of everything each one offers can be tricky.

Here’s a handy comparison chart with our current product offering. As always, for more information about any individual product including lists of supported Bluetooth mobile phones, visit TomTom.com.

I bought a TomTom One LE from Best Buy.

I’m a sailor; can the TomTom be used with marine navigation? with marine charts?

Administrator 12.28.07 at 10:10 am

Unfortunately no. TomTom GPS devices are for on-road navigation only.

Hi
I am getting ready to purchase a TOM TOM GPS and I saw the above comparison chart. Just to clarify, is screen size the only difference between the ONE and the ONE XL. Is there any other reason to purchase the ONE XL vs the ONE 3rd edition?
thanks

Administrator 02.05.08 at 9:41 am

Almost correct. In addition to the 4.3″ screen, the ONE XL also is Bluetooth compatible for access to TomTom Weather, Traffic, and other services. But please note, ONE XL does not offer handsfree calling.

Tim 02.05.08 at 10:25 am

The ONE XL also includes Itinerary Planning which is not on the ONE 3rd Edition. ;)

Administrator 02.06.08 at 9:18 am

Good call Tim! I forgot about that.

The easiest way to buy maps of the US is via TomTom HOME. Hope this helps!

Can Tomtom one XL-S play the pictures in the SD card, like slide show?

Administrator 03.12.08 at 8:26 am

Sorry Wendy. The ONE XL doesn’t have a picture viewer. That is a feature of the GO line.

Phil 07.29.08 at 9:16 pm

I am interested in a One XL or One XLS model. I would like to know how easy it is to generate arbitrary routes. Most trips I plan routes for scenery and I would like to have the Tom Tom lead me along this route. I sometime finish a big trip on the back roads. I would down load computer generated routes for these predetermined routes.

Not true that you can’t use your TOMTOM as a nav unit for boating.
I’ve set up nautical charts for much of the waters around Massachusetts and it works great. Using overlay maps I can zoom into an area and have closer harbor maps appear.
If you like I can provide you with the Massachusetts navigation charts I’ve worked up.

John

I am very interested in seeing what you did to add charts.

I wanted to buy TomTom One S. I know that TomTom One S comes with spoken instructions with street names but not sure whether it includes MapShare Technology. Can you please clarify me what all features does this product has?
Also, does TomTom One S and TomTom 3rd edition both same?

Administrator 01.23.09 at 9:38 am

Madhavi - The Walmart exclusive TomTom ONE S product does indeed include MapShare technology. The only difference from the ONE 3rd edition is that the ONE S has spoken street names.

I am looking at a tomtom one xl-s refurbished unit on amazon.com. Some reviews state that the maps are old on these units and I would have to pay $99 for a map upgrade inorder to participate in map share. Is this true. Thanks for your help.

I have a German family member on vacation here in FL. They’re using my GPS and want to buy a TomTom. I know they can get maps of Germany but, before they do, can they take this back to Germany and interact with the unit in their language and the metric system?

Administrator 03.24.09 at 2:06 pm

Yes. They’ll be able to interact with the menus in their language and toggle the measurements. This can be achieved by tapping “Change Preferences” from the main menu. However, without maps of Germany, they won’t be able to use any of the navigation features.

Can I use my TomTom One to get coordinate locations to use with nautical maps/charts?

Administrator 04.23.09 at 10:06 am

Our products aren’t designed for marine use yet, but I’ll mention to our developers that people are asking about it. Thanks!

Ken Smith 05.02.09 at 8:50 pm

Hi. Thinking of replacing a Garmin product I currently use. I need some pretty specific routing (itinerary) functionality and I do not know which of your products fit my needs.

I like to make very detailed routes in a mapping software program then import them into the GPS for navigation. The GPS I use now may randomly ignore certain via points when recalculating. This happens when recalcing loop routes with a common origin and destination. Sometimes, the GPS will route me back to the origin via the via points I already passed, ignoring all the ones I have yet to visit. When this happens, I effectively “lose” all my remaining via points, and effectively lose my preplanned itinerary. The only way around this is to use Waypoints, which is a pain. I need to definitively know if the Tom Tom routing algorythm treats via points and waypoints differently, and if so, then how they differ.

So, in short, I need a GPS that will keep me on a route I design, will observe all vias in the order I specify them, and will not decide to ignore any of them.

I also need the ability to edit a route’s via points via the GPS interface. Often, I will need to delete a via while in route. The GPS would then need to recalculate the route through the remaining, non-deleted vias and waypoints.

I need ability to store at least 50 routes, preferably thousands of waypoints, and the ability to use at least 500 points in a single route. If at all possible, I would like to store routes on an SD card, and not on the GPS itself.

Given this set of needs, what Tom Tom products would work for me? I care nothing about traffic, etc. What I need is really robust routing and trip planning. Waterproof is a plus.

Ideas?

Thanks.

I too am very interested in North American waterway maps. (Like the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and larger lakes Cumberland, Huron, Michigan etc.) I would much prefer to buy marine maps from you rather than replace my TT as it is perfect in all respects save this one glaring feature omission. Thanks

Marine nav charts. Marine nav charts. Marine nav charts… Please!

Alex 06.03.09 at 10:30 pm

I recently purchased a tomtom for my road trips and would be thrilled if it could be used to display marine charts as well.

Laura 06.06.09 at 11:51 pm

I have a Tomtom One for the United States (and I assume Canada). Will I be able to use it in Alaska? Thanks.

Brad 06.10.09 at 7:43 am

Yes indeed. Our US & Canada maps include all 50 US states.

Brad 06.10.09 at 7:44 am

Hmm. You should be able to buy a US & Mexico map. Which device do you have?

Jody 06.18.09 at 3:00 pm

Hello, I recently purchased a Go730 and was wondering if there’s a reason why there aren’t many lakes on the maps…or am I missing something? I was trying to find this particular scenic road that followed the edge of Lake Rabun in north Georgia and drove for a good while until finally stopping someone on the road and asking them how to get there…and I was less than a mile from it. I would have thought it would have shown it. The lake’s not that small either. I would think that lakes would be POI’s at least, if not standard. Thanks

Jody 06.18.09 at 3:10 pm

Does anyone know where I can get the Mad Maps map routes? I would love to get them, even if they are old…since most of the routes included are old roads with beautiful views. Thanks

Chris 06.19.09 at 3:09 pm

NAVIGATION CHARTS - I am trying to get in touch with JOHN who made a comment about having NAV charts for the waters around MASSACHUSETTS on 08/14/08. I would like to get copies of these charts, or if anyone else has or knows how to get NAV CHARTS for the GO 720 I would be interested. Thanks, Chris
