Does anyone know why certain phone only support voice and not wirless data services? I mean I have a Samsung Blackjack, supposedly running the latest version of Bluetooth (2.0) and it only supports voice. Why would that be the case??
Administrator said,

Jimmy,
Some phones, like the Blackjack, do not have the ability to process
external data requests. So while it does have excellent connectivity
for handsfree calling, these phones don’t transfer to a secondary device
like a TomTom.

I am hoping that someone can please tell me how to manually set up the tomtom rider so that I can have my nextel i580 work with the tomtom rider. It currently links with the blue tooth for the phone calls incoming but I can’t figure out how to get it to show the address book or to get the current weather information.
Hope someone out there can help me.
Thanks,
Randy

Randy,
Unfortunately Nextel is not a compatible provider.
While your phone might still pair with the TomTom and operate some
features, others might not work (i.e. phonebook transfer, traffic,
etc…)
For a full compatibility list for TomTom RIDER, please visit:

Thanks!

What PDA/Smartphone would you suggest? There does not appear to be any current devices available that are compatible? I have a Samsung Blackjack and I’m unable to get the data link to work. Hands free is great, but I’m missing the critical traffic piece.
I have the new 720 and there is no real help for that yet, that I’ve found. I like the device, but I’m almost ready to return it. Are the FM traffic adapters available yet?

The list of TomTom GO 720 compatible Bluetooth mobile phones can be found on TomTom.com here: http://www.tomtom.com/products/features.php?ID=383%26Category=0%26Lid=4
Unfortunately, the RDS-TMC traffic antenna is coming, but not yet available in the United States.

Bluetooth connectivity on the TomTom ONE XL is for access to TomTom PLUS Services. It does not support handsfree calling. However, handsfree calling is available on the TomTom GO 510, 910 and 720.

Is verizon compatible? Does verizon do gprs? Is the starcomm xv6700 compatible? (If the phone is not supported, which one of your supported phones uses windows mobile 6.0 as a set up example?)
Administrator said,

Sorry Paul. The TomTom ONE line – including ONE XL and ONE 3rd edition – do not have handsfree calling capabilities. That’s a feature of the GO line of products.
The Bluetooth connectivity in ONE is for access to TomTom PLUS Services including Traffic and Weather which require access to the GPRS network.

The ONE XL is Bluetooth enabled for access to TomTom PLUS Services like Traffic and Weather. It is not, however, configured for handsfree calling.

Adam, I’m in the slow process of building up a list of user-submitted Bluetooth Compatibility results. I don’t have anything for the 720/8310 yet, but there are reports for the 720/8300, 910/8830, and 920/8320.
You can view the list here:

For a tomtom 920 w/v 8.010:
Maybe of some (little use). I have a Motorola V365 w/Cingular (ATT). It pairs fine, phone book transfers and it will receive and read text messages. It will not respond to, or create, new text messages. Also, I have to use the phone’s end button to end a call.
PLUS services (I’ve only tried Weather) are iffy. I’m using a manual setup w/username WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM and password CINGULAR1. The GPRS APN is wap.cingular.
The usual result: the 920 breaks the bluetooth link after the weather location is chosen. I have managed to get weather a couple of times - it’s neat when I can get it to work.
