2006.9.11 RIDER04.jpg

If we’ve learned one thing about sat nav fans (and we like to think that we’ve learned a bit more than just one) it’s that you folks like options.

As such, here’s a little something for RIDER owners. With so many different kinds of motorcycles out there, we know that maybe your bike needs a little something different.

The crafty engineers over at RAM Mounts have put together some potential options for your bike. Check them out right here.

SiRF StarIII and why it’s so cool

homelogo2.gif

At any given moment, there are 24 Global Positioning System satellites circling our atmosphere at an altitude of 12,600 miles (that’s 20,300 kilometers to metric system enthusiasts). They’re floating around up there, sending out information to monitoring stations and GPS navigation devices across the world.

But how does your TomTom receive that information?

Glad you asked. The starIII chipset from SiRF, a leader in location technology, is the backbone of the TomTom GO 510, GO 910, and RIDER’s ability to get a “view” of GPS satellites very quickly and pinpoint your position on Earth within a matter of yards. The chips “read” the signals the satellites are pumping out 24/7 and “talk” to your TomTom’s firmware which then “translates” that into the convenient displays you see onscreen.

What make the SiRF starIII chipset unique are its more than 200,000 correlators which enable the chip to read the satellites’ signals quicker and then relay that information to your TomTom, even in traditionally low signal areas like urban canyons and under dense foliage. Some current GPS chips may have only a few hundred to a few thousand correlators.

What does it all mean? Quite simply, quicker and more accurate navigation for you.

Laconia Recap

Engines blared, the sun pounded, and the people were…umm…lively. In short, Motorcycle Week at Laconia was awesome. We rode the TomTom RIDER on our TomTom-branded Suzuki into town and really didn’t want to leave.

Hundreds of bike enthusiasts came by our two locations – under the Suzuki tent and at the FunSpot (which lived up to its name) – and tried out the first TomTom navigation device designed specifically for motorcycles. Most exciting for us was the cross-section of people we got to meet. From the Harley diehards to sport bike fans, the idea of easy-to-use, easy-to-see, easy-to-hear GPS on a bike piqued the interest of them all.

Many thanks to all who stopped by to check out the RIDER. It was great to meet all of you.

Couldn’t make it to New Hampshire? Next up, we show off the RIDER on the West Coast at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix MotoGP event at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Salinas, CA, from July 21-23.
