TomTom Map Share™ set to music

OK, I’m really feeling the jet lag today, but you’ll be happy to know that I ‘ve crossed back over the pond and I’m back in Concord.

Recently, I got the chance to talk to some of our Map Specialists whose job it is to manage all the edits users submit via TomTom Map Share™. It’s really an interesting process and one that I plan on blogging about at length in the near future. Until then, though, please enjoy the next installment of TomTom GO 720: The Movie. In this week’s spine-tingling, action-packed episode: The Man in the Collared-shirt encounters… a road block.

You know, for the last few weeks we’ve been talking about the GO 720’s bevy of new features. But what good is me talking about it… at length… if you can’t really see it in action.

Change your car symbol

So it may not necessarily enhance the navigation capabilities of your TomTom GO 720, but it’s pretty cool to be able to choose your own car symbol.

The GO 720 comes preloaded with a variety of fun choices. But, if you want to get a bit inventive, you can even create your own. Just follow these steps:

1) Select the digital image you’d like as a car icon;
2) Convert it to a 256-color bitmap file;
3) Size it such that it’s between 24 x 24 pixels and 128 x 128 pixels.
It has to be square or it won’t work;
4) “Erase” any imagery you don’t want to appear by coloring it red (RGB 255,0,0);
5) Plug your TomTom into your PC and open the root folder;
6) Put your bitmap image in the subfolder “cars” found in the “art” folder.

If you’ve followed the steps correctly, your image will appear as a selection on your device. Here’s the image I made (my lame Sentra) and how it looks on my device.

Have a cool car symbol on your GO 720? We want to see. Send us your bitmap at asktomtom@clubtomtom.com. If it’s tasteful, we’ll share with the class.

Help me GO 720… Help me, help you!

Bad stuff happens. Murphy even wrote a Law about it. The new TomTom GO 720’s ‘Help me!’ menu is designed to help you out when stuff goes wrong.

Instead of fumbling through phonebooks or using 411, the Help Me! menu can automatically route you – walking OR driving – to the nearest emergency services like police and hospitals, all with a few taps on the screen.

If you’ve paired a compatible Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone with the GO 720, you can also immediately call emergency services via your device.

The feature I find most useful in the Help Me! menu is the Where am I? button. If, for example, your car breaks down in an unfamiliar place, Where am I? provides you – in plain English – a description of your current location including Latitude/Longitude, even if you’ve recently lost GPS satellite lock.

All in all, Help Me! is simply about keeping you safe and confident behind the wheel. There’s lots more to Help me! and it’s just one of the many all new features of the GO 720. Head on over to TomTom.com to learn more!
