iPhone and Riddle News

If I had a World Series ticket for every time someone asked about iPhone compatibility with TomTom devices, you’d all be coming with me.

That being the case, I have some news…

The Apple iPhone is now officially supported for use with handsfree calling on the TomTom GO 510/910 and 720.

Also, I’m still looking for an answer to last week’s riddle. Read the comments for clues. Remember, eternal fame awaits the one who can figure out this navigational conundrum and be the first to comment with the answer.

Have a great weekend!

Riddle me this…

Here’s an interesting situation reported by a prominent GPS blogger who shall remain nameless (but linkful)…

While on a trip recently, he reported that his TomTom GO 720 stated the following direction:

“Turn around when possible. Then, turn around when possible.”

The blogger explained it to me and it was indeed the correct direction given the route he had planned and the road he was on.

My question to you, dear readers: In what situation could this be the correct navigation instruction?

Drop me a line if you know the answer. The first person with the correct situation will get the eternal fame associated with being mentioned on Club TomTom.

How much?
$129.95

Where can I get it?
Check the Store Locator on the TomTom homepage, or head over to the webstore TomTom.com.

Where does it get its traffic data?
The receiver gets data from the Clear Channel traffic FM data feed. Here’s a map of all the areas where the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver can provide incident data

Is the traffic data free?
Each RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver comes with a one-year subscription to the traffic data. It will be $59.95 per year thereafter.

No. The RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver can be moved from device-to-device without affecting your subscription. There is an internal timestamp in the receiver that is activated when you first plug it in, however, the TomTom device does not affect this at all.

Record your own voice…

If you’re an egomaniac like me, you’re ecstatic that the new TomTom GO 720 has record-your-own-voice functionality. With GO 720’s built-in microphone you can record fifty common directions and then listen to your own mellifluous voice as you navigate with ease.

Of course, if you’ve chosen a Computer Voice to provide you with text-to-speech (i.e. including street names) directions, your own voice isn’t the only one you’ll hear. Rather, the TomTom voice and yours will work together.

And, as an added tidbit, you can also share your recorded voice with friends (or enemies I suppose)… Just as I’m about to do for you.

WARNING: Before you do this, TomTom begs that you please backup your device using TomTom HOME. Here’s how.

If you open the root folder of your TomTom GO 720 AND you’ve recorded your own voice, you’ll see a folder called ‘customvoice.’ Contained therein are WAV files of all the directions you’ve recorded. If you haven’t recorded any voice directions, this folder won’t appear.

GO 720 owners, if you want to get a taste of a homebrew TomTom voice but don’t want to go through the process of actually recording your own, here’s a full voice file of yours truly. Just unzip and add it to your TomTom’s root folder or replace your existing voice files for an all together unique and not-all-that-thrilling navigation experiment.
