SiRF StarIII and why it’s so cool

homelogo2.gif

At any given moment, there are 24 Global Positioning System satellites circling our atmosphere at an altitude of 12,600 miles (that’s 20,300 kilometers to metric system enthusiasts). They’re floating around up there, sending out information to monitoring stations and GPS navigation devices across the world.

But how does your TomTom receive that information?

Glad you asked. The starIII chipset from SiRF, a leader in location technology, is the backbone of the TomTom GO 510, GO 910, and RIDER’s ability to get a “view” of GPS satellites very quickly and pinpoint your position on Earth within a matter of yards. The chips “read” the signals the satellites are pumping out 24/7 and “talk” to your TomTom’s firmware which then “translates” that into the convenient displays you see onscreen.

What make the SiRF starIII chipset unique are its more than 200,000 correlators which enable the chip to read the satellites’ signals quicker and then relay that information to your TomTom, even in traditionally low signal areas like urban canyons and under dense foliage. Some current GPS chips may have only a few hundred to a few thousand correlators.

What does it all mean? Quite simply, quicker and more accurate navigation for you.

Destination: Safety

Keeping drivers safe is a top priority for TomTom. Our personal navigation devices are designed for hands-free calling with most Bluetooth™–enabled phones, allowing TomTom drivers to pay full attention to the road while making or receiving calls. More, the turn by turn voice instructions allow the TomTom driver to pay full attention to the road while navigating them from door to door.

The newest TomTom products – the GO 510 and GO 910 – also incorporate a buddy finding tool (works almost exactly like IM) that can be used to keep track of teenagers or other people you’d like to find – with granted permission of course! The feature allows drivers to view on the screen and navigate to their designated buddies, whether they be in the U.S., Canada or Europe. Similar to IM, the GO 510 or 910 will also read text messages to drivers as they come in.

Through TomTom PLUS services, TomTom drivers can be forewarned of upcoming road conditions, including icy roads, fog or construction. Weather and road conditions will be read aloud to the driver, again allowing you to keep your eyes on the road.

Another safety-focused feature on the GO 510 and GO 910 is the incorporation of the road’s speed limit. This feature allows the driver to see if they are going over or under the legal limit quickly. With TomTom GO as your passenger, you have everything you need to get safely (and hopefully ticket-free!) to your desired destinations.

TomTom at CeBIT 2006

Since 2004 TomTom has attended CeBIT in Hanover, Germany and with every year that passed the stand grew bigger.

The 2006 CeBIT stand for TomTom was around the 300 square meters and had two floors. The downstairs floor contained more then 70 products, varying from TomTom RIDER, to NAVIGATOR 5, MOBILE 5, TomTom ONE to our newest GO range; GO 510, GO 710 and GO 910. But there was more to see on the first floor, we had a motorbike, a scooter and one quarter of the stand was dedicated to TomTom WORK, TomTom’s solution for fleet management. The second floor contained 3 meeting rooms, a bar and a lounge area. During the 7 days of the fair the stand was packed and full of trade visitors, consumers and journalists, all interested in TomTom and the cool and exciting products.

The stand was one of a kind; very stylish and unique.

This year we can say that TomTom’s presence at CeBIT has again been very successful.
