The very basics of routing

Hey, how does that whole routing thing work? How does TomTom know where to go? VERY common question. Glad you asked.

Before your TomTom sends you on your way it has to go through a rather complex process of calculating your route using your device’s already installed mapping software. Of course, it all happens in moments. First, you must choose which kind of route you want.

Most people choose to map the Fastest Route, that is, the route that will keep you on the road for the least amount of time. This is very different from the shortest route, which calculates only geographical distance. A route of this type will often take you on back roads with low speed limits which are not always the quickest way to get to your destination.

Meet Katherine Sigel

KatherineSigel.jpg

Katherine is TomTom’s Product Manager for Content & Services. She manages such products as PLUS services, traffic, points of interest, maps, and others to ensure that users are getting the most up-to-date and relevant content. This entails shepherding each new product through the rigorous testing phases right through production and distribution. She came to TomTom after beginning her technology career at Netsize in Paris, France, and then Cingular here in the States.

When not checking POIs, speaking French, and deftly avoiding traffic jams, Katherine enjoys recreational sports and, recently, has undertaken the task of renovating her new house.

As a product manager, Katherine is another one of the lucky TomTomers who gets to test all the devices in all stages of development. Her favorite is the new TomTom ONE and her favorite feature is itinerary planning. “My husband and I recently went on a house hunt. What we’d do was just load ten different open houses onto our TomTom and our day was set. No time was wasted getting lost. We always saw every house on our list. TomTom is a great solution for the real estate industry!”

Meet Mindy Hines

MindyHines.jpg

Mindy is TomTom Inc.’s Advertising and Brand Manager. Within the Marketing department, Mindy works with creative agencies to develop branding and event driven material for TV, radio, print and online media. She also manages the relationship with TomTom’s media partner to develop media campaigns which air nationally in the US and Canada

Mindy came to TomTom after working in Marketing at TJ Maxx/Marshalls.

Mindy has a TomTom GO700 in her car and particularly likes being able to change the voice periodically. “I like the Australian guy, Ken. He makes me feel all continental on the road, ‘prepare to enter the motorway.’”

In all seriousness, Mindy most appreciates being able to store destinations. “With the kids it’s always cheerleading, soccer, football, we’re always going to obscure locations. I rarely know how to get there so I have TomTom lead the way. I love the ‘Home’ icon. After a long day chauffeuring the kids, it’s greatly appreciated.”
